The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is planning to
construct a bike trail connecting the Mauthe and Long Lake Recreation
Areas in the Kettle
Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit. The Forest Master Plan called for
an eight-mile route connecting the two recreation areas.
After concerns over the original plan were presented the new
(changes from original plan are in bold) proposed trail specifications
that will be presented to the State Building Commission in December are:
1. 5.4 mile route from
Mauthe to Long Lake Recreation Areas.
2. 10-foot wide crushed limestone surface.
3. Two bridge crossings, both over the east branch of the
Milwaukee River.
4. Wetlands along the proposed route will require approx. 2,000
linear ft. of boardwalk.
5. Trail route to traverse gentle to rolling topography.
6. Trail
will access Dundee.
The funding of $418,000.00 will be split between the Federal
Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Wisconsin Stewardship Fund.
The anticipated completion date
remains at 2006.
There may be
additional projects for the bike trail that will not be funded, i.e.
parking and rest areas, that area clubs may be willing to sponsor. The
trail will not be groomed in the winter and is not for motorized
vehicles. At this time there will not be a charge to use the trail.
