As the human population increases
world wide, there are less naturally wild areas and more pollution.
Different types of pollution affect different organisms in multiple
ways, but perhaps one of the most severely affected classes of
organisms is the amphibians. There are many reasons for amphibians
increased sensitivity to pollutants, as well as various impacts on
their populations, and morphology.
Amphibians make up a class of nearly 6,000 tetrapod species
categorized into three major orders: Anura (frogs and toads),
Urodela (salamanders and newts) and Gymnophiona (caccilians, which
are wormlike in appearance). They are all categorized as ecothermic
vertebrates, meaning they must regulate their body temperature by
external means such as using the sun, air or water. They also all

Scholarship:
For the past several years the Long Lake Fishing Club has worked
with the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, College of
Natural Resources, to award a
scholarship (this year’s scholarship amount is $1,000). The
scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior at the school
concentrating on lake management, fisheries, land use planning, or
waste management. This year’s recipient was Kathryn Witkowski from
Plymouth. Kathryn’s essay on the effects of pollution to amphibians
on inland lakes can be read on page 1.
Long

Walleye fingerlings were released into Long Lake on Friday, May 8th.
