From the Prez
by Charles Benson,
So how was your 2007? Good, I hope. As for the
Club, it has been interesting. We did manage to get through
all of our functions without any glitches other than the
lack of sufficient ice. We managed to stock 2,100 Walleyes
with clipped fins for an ongoing study as to their growth
rates. It is our hope that the youth who participated in
our Club sponsored events learn to become better anglers of
the future for Long Lake as well as all of the bodies of
water they fish. We hope that our scholarships are put to
good use in the students who received them for our lake
ecologist of the future. We also hope that you, our
members, got to enjoy the lake and our area in 2007 and will
continue to do so in the future.
Some of you may be wondering
why a lake association is forming to take on the weed issue
on Long Lake. You also could be wondering why the Fishing
Club isn’t taking this on directly and why we’re allowing or
even encouraging this separate group to form. I could say
that it was the board’s decision and leave it at that but I
feel you all need to understand there is a lot more to it.
First
of all, the DNR was responding to some property owner groups
wishes to be allowed to spray the weeds so they could get
their boats out on the lake. It also came about from the
DNR’s alarm as to the presence of Eurasian Watermilfoil and
curly leaf pond weed in the lake. They wanted to help us
confront this situation but did not want to deal with a
multi-group scenario. To our knowledge there are separate
grants being applied for and with some matching funds being
required it looked as if we would have had to ask our
members to donate about $50 each to take on the project.
Since many of the property owners do not belong to the Long
